What we can learn from Goku

It might seem like just a cartoon with no other purpose than defeating big bad aliens, androids, or other things. But I was recently thinking about Goku’s personality. At first he seems rather dumb and naive, a guy who is just more powerful than the rest because he’s actually an alien (Saiyan). But if you look closer, he’s awesome. He has the personality of a good winner and successful person.

Gokus always trying to be the best, and he does that without dissing  his opponents. Why make them feel bad anyways? They’re just people trying to be the best as well, but only one can be the best at a time. He has a positive competitive attitude. He’s humble, but is assertive about what he wants. If he wins, he’s happy. If he loses, he’s happy as well. But why? Why should he be happy that he lost a match? Because it means he has to train to become even better. And maybe that’s more important to Goku, being a better him.

He’s also always excited when some new guy comes around who seems to be as strong as him, or stronger. Why would he be excited about that? Shouldn’t he be scared that someone could be better than him? Not Goku. Because being around better guys motivate him to become better himself. Plus they can teach him a thing or two.

So there’s three things we can learn from Goku.

  • Have a positive competitive attitude and don’t try to become better than someone at something by being an ass. Try to become a better you that happens to be better than that someone instead.
  • Losing, or failing in general, is good, take it as an opportunity to learn and become a better you. Losing is only bad if you don’t do anything afterwards to improve.
  • Being around people that are better or equally skilled at something can motivate you to improve.

For me there’s always competition, even when your hobby or whatever you want to become the best at is a one man thing. The competitor becomes you.
